Atherley - more than ...

There has been a comment about the snow this Winter, So I am going to show a small section of Atherley  - it is more than a road as you will see:

 - there is the village itself some 2k away in the distance,

- there are  a) Trans-Canada Trail 7000Km long

                   b) Ganaraska Trail some 300Km connecting to the Bruce (nearly 900km)

                    c) Trails for Life 10Km in Orillia but connecting to the above plus one to Barrie

and in Winter one of the snowmobile trails - all superimposed on each other, and separated by several meters from the "road". These trails are also bike trails in other seasons. I run and walk here, too. That is a "gate" with 2 barriers swung to the left during winter and across the trail at the driveway - marked by the bare patch - when there is no snow. The trail is paved

and plowed where I am standing by the snowmobile section. The red stop sign is for the snowmobilers and the blue sign below identifies the route. Yes there are maps of snow trails. There are 1000s of kilometers of marked  trails .

And Atherley Road is 4 lanes wide, 2 in each direction. Not easy to see with such high levels of snow.

There are 2 snowmobiles on this truck. Look at the "teeth" on the central belt, The truck can be seen in the photo above the closeup with the trail in front and an idea of how deep the snow is,

The above view is across Atherley and a side street to a pile of snow hiding a truck! The snow is probably also hiding a tired snow shoveler who left his shovel on guard to prevent the snow from being stolen?

Next, is our diner, just across the street:

Note that I am looking across 4 lanes of roadway and the snow pile on the far side has a gap - under the "HERLE"so cars can park at the restaurant.

And finally for today:

The bus stop shelter with snow on its roof. Some blue shadows to the right of it give a hint of the shoveled path from my walkway to the bus stop. And at the extreme left edge there is another snowmobile traffic sign partially buried in the snow.

So this is my answer: "All my troubles seem" !

What is going to happen when this melts?

Quack, quack,

Raised the "Bar"

The temperature rose above 0°C today - " balmy" in at least 2 senses of the word.

Went out to explore. Saw this out of the corner of my eye:

Did not stay long before it flew:

Only the 2nd Barred owl this winter and 3rd total.

"Κόμη Βορέου" (Kómi Boreou)

For my Greek friends whom I met in Germany, Greece, and Crete:

The "hair" of Halley is starting to grow back in and already the barbers are getting ready

"Coma Borealis" in Greek would be translated as "Κόμη Βορέου" (Kómi Boreou),
where "Kómi" means "hair" and "Boreou" refers to "Boreas,"
the Greek god of the North Wind

Yesterday - a few days ago

 All my troubles seem ...

How can one get a cup of coffee?

Or where is the front door?

This is not for dogs, but rather so the fire department can find the fire hydrant:

Finding one's home is still "tricky":

And good luck with the car!

Actually, even finding one's home is not the end of the problem. There still remains the  "entering the building":

 Or here:

Some words from Gordon Lightfoot's song, "Sundown" came to mind:

Sundown, you better take careIf I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs

Yesterday

Same view as on Feb 14, 4 days later:

I thought I would take a condo-centred view of the world in sunshine. I'll start from away to the west looking eastward:

Note that there is a person in the centre of the image just to the right of the electricity pole.

The snow piles are 2 to 3m tall here - taller elsewhere for sure, but these are good for starters.

A little eastward from here but on Atherley the shapes become clearer:

This looks civilized - bus stop is shovelled out on both sides!

The picnic table hasn't been cleared yet:

That is the table to the left of the tree trunk with benches in front and behind, all covered in nice white fluffy snow.

I'll leave the street and snowmobile trail for another time and continue my approach:

Above left,

Below centre

And right

The snowy mound projected on the right end of the building is covering a large flower pot.

And finally there are stairs to the right to take you back on the "Trails for Life" :

Before I go inside to get warm - a last look out the front, shades of the April solar eclipse last year - I am sure you remember it.

 Hot chocolate, anyone?

Valentine's Day

 Candy is dandy .

 Really?

Try cracked corn -

Then there are those romantics -

And those who still believe -

in Santa Claus.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

So now I am looking forward to  March 14, a "reply day", on which men are expected to return the favour to those who gave them chocolates on Valentine's Day!

Stay tuned?

Love,

WOB
