The turkeys and sunset impressions

We saw cattle egrets here a couple of years ago and since that time we often drive by to see what is new. Like on Saturday afternoon we saw some 20+ turkeys:

We drove on to the Uhthoff Line heading down to Division East when we saw these 6, yes completely countable integer turkeys, what a contrast to counting trumpets!

But of course, you cannot see all 6 because they were too spread out to be recognized in the wide angle shots. We then went to Grant's Woods to look for barred owls without success. Still interesting to walk there in the twilight.

It is amazing how much there is to see when one is outside looking for beauty.

Hazards of Winter Driving

Now I have stopped the car because this is the 4th turkey to fly across and I spotted him early. Yes, through the windscreen.

They don't fly fast - but then I had to switch to manual focus - I am on the road.

I was returning from Carthew Reserve mid afternoon.

At least 1 hole made by a pileated woodpecker - the top one.

 Stood here for awhile - a large bird flew off heavily as I was arriving - a grouse, maybe?

Birds of a feather flock together

Just a quicky from yesterday - actually almost a duplicate of 12 months ago.

South-west of Strongville - maybe a couple dozen wild turkeys, They were right up to the
small country sideroad. However, I had to stop the car to get my camera and that set them off. The photos were taken from inside the car, window down. -10C

Birding with Donald at Dusk

I have been out with the camera 5 times in the past 8 days so either you were lucky with "spam" or your luck is about to be renewed.

First we turned off #12 into a field of turkeys before I was even "there"/ready:

There are I think 10 here but the flock must have had nearly 30.

Then Donals spotted a hawk:

We may have seen the same hawk on the other side of the woods a little later:

We followed its flight into a wood where it was mobbed by a pileated woodpecker:

Both eventually  flew from our sight.

Ice fishermen and turkeys

It is mild today as it was yesterday and I heard that the there is approx 6cm thick ice on the lake but that it is not uniform. Vicki just called out that there are turkeys seeking shelter from the rain/liquid air when what to my wondering eyes should appear but 4 fishermen - no woman would do such a thing, would they?
