Thoughts on "cold" and wind chill

The following were taken on Friday, from a collection of 14 if you are interested.


First what is "cold"?

This made me cold just to think about it - and yet maybe a pair of solar lights looking at the north sky for the past several years, with narry adrop of golden sun - is also a reminder of what is cold -

Maybe tied with this is a bouquet from December when it was warmly given and also so received?

Beyond this is the terrace, now full of snow -

The cold gets to me when I see summer canoes buried in cold -

So what will March bring? Rain is in the forecast for Monday! Winter has been interesting - but will not last for ever.

The Day after the Night before

Minus 15C it was but now it is much hotter:

That is, inside and out.

The terrace is white - the view around 10am.

And time to begin my dream of "white water" canoeing:

And the geese are getting fat - they aren't the only beings doing so, unfortunately.

So what does a young man think about after such an event?

This photo was taken before 2pm. The sun came out an hour or so later and just after 5pm I went outside to shoot the sun through this snowy coating.

Sunday Part I. A view from my balcony as I was drinking coffee!

Yes, this is part I written after part II had been safely (?) posted.
I was out in my shorts - I said I would spare you - because it was a very warm 10C in the shade which meant that it was also sunny. Astronomers are like that.

had this view. (Split infinitives?) Anyway: straight out, to the right zoomed, and then repeat to the northish.
Then I saw this crazy black bird do a belly flop into the water. When it rose up I realized that it was a kingfisher - they are back! A few minutes later it reappeared on a branch in our willow, so I went off to get my camera. Of course it was gone when I returned. However, I selected manual focus and preset to the distance of the willow tree and waited. I did not expect this:

Tuesday Afternoon

It rained today. just barely above freezing but no black ice. Still it was a day of poor visibility and you can just imagine a white screen of low cloud rain and ice on the lake.

So your imagination isn't so good.

OK, here are some impressions from Tuesday when the skies were not cloudy all day.
Looking north-east wide-angle:

Looking North toward the Leacock peninsula where Kingfishers nest - they have not been sighted yet.

 Looking north of east toward Tudhope Park where there are 2 baseball diamonds, an osprey nest, and a spawning ground, I think for suckers.

And finally zooming in toward Horseshoe Island the long blue shadows over the frozen lake

Looks like winter is slowly wrapping up. I know it will soon be gone but it has been short, not too cold and I did get out on both skiis and snowshoes. wob

Comparisons

I am away behind in getting my ideas onto this page - they will have to wait. However, something simple is to show you how much snow we have. The snow shots are from today, the "green" shots from May 2011 - I do not photograph the terrace all that often. Might later add some cold turkey to the menu if you ask.

And there is more snow (a) in the bush/forest and (b) further north Bracebridge-Huntsville direction. The temperature this afternoon was a hot -11C. I wore too much and there wasn't even a wind chill! wob

Groundhog Day

We cannot afford groundhogs and we slept in until 9:30 when the snow stopped - so no shadows under our eyes. Maybe some sunshine this afternoon - does that matter for the prediction? We have squirrels - will they do? Bushy tails indicate a long fasting period - carnival is in 2 weeks, plus 40 days: we shall see.

Ya, these are more my thoughts. And camping with solar power for Earth Hour on Saturday March 28:

Believe it or not they face north, receive no direct sunlight until we arrive in Killarney - provided it is not 2014! And they glow all night long. We think there is a monster who/which lives here and visits us in the night. These tracks were seen this morning:

Wonder if it can be appeased with maple syrup? Help! Call the police!
