The Northern Saw-whet Owl

This is still Wed Oct 7, 2015
And that is not a story - but it could be. It all started with an invitation to see owls being banded, Northern Saw-whets in particular.

Janos took down the nets for day-time but showed us how they might work by tossing his hat into a net:


Then Hardy set up the nets down in a ravine and started the recording:

Each bird is put in a suitable and clean bag and brought up to the measuring station:








The wing pattern seen above in UV light disappears after the 1st year or so.






So that is the story of catch 'n' release:
